I do not know whether I would change that boy’s life if I could, because changing one part of a life has a way of unravelling the rest. The striving that cost me also carried me, and the loneliness that hurt me also taught me to observe, remember, work and endure. That is the uncomfortable truth of it, and memoir becomes dishonest when it pretends our wounds did not also shape our strengths.
