Silver Schoolies No More - Chapter 1 - The Transition

Whatever decision we make, for now its all about the wandering, the seeing, and the recording of our adventures in words and pictures.

The safety net is being set aside. No longer will there be accompanying travellers as we traverse the great Australian land.

First it was Forbsey, returning to Newcastle for a wedding (which unfortunately due to Covid was postponed, much to his chagrin). Now Silver Leader and Rose, companions for both trips – Around Oz the First Time and Here We Go Again – have headed on their own way home.

It doesn’t help Silver Leader (Wayne) has hurt himself and will require surgery on a muscle in his arm, either here in Western Australia or immediately on his return to the East Coast, nor the call of the family they seem not able to ignore, is dragging them towards the east for Christmas.

For us, we have an appointment in Brisbane in February. The insecurity around lockdowns inflicted at the drop of a hat by state leaders, hellbent on apparently scoring political points, rather than seeking the greater good, has made us take the decision to be in Queensland for Christmas, rather than be in a position where a lockdown restricts from this most important of life moments for us.

Add to that and the want to experience the wet season of the tropics, as well as the chance to celebrate her 65th birthday the same way we celebrated her 60th at Uluru and we have good reason to move north rather than south, towards the heat rather than the cold. There are lots of places we haven’t seen as yet which we will have plenty of time to investigate.

We can aim to be around Wyndham and the Northern Territory border by the end of October (a month away), travel south to the Rock and back and be at the Queensland border around the end of November (might even sneak up to Darwin for some fishing) and then head towards Mackay for Christmas with Darryl and Lorelle who we spent only a day with on the way up.

After seeing in the new year, there might be time to attend some more Secret Men’s Business meetings at Woodford before attending the appointment in Brisbane in February. There is talk of a houseboat on the Murray towards the end of March. After that, who knows. We are then, into the next year and what might happen then, we are unsure. I suspect Covid might have a lot to do with any decision we make.

Whatever decision we make, for now its all about the wandering, the seeing, and the recording of our adventures in words and pictures.
