Here We Go Again - Chapter 89 - Broome Day 11

Again - everyone being full of their own importance.

The blackout apparently affected internet its very scratchy this morning and getting to my emails and other important materials is all but impossible. Restarting the laptop seems to sort out the issues.

The analysis of the issues with the links of the webinar of the previous evening begins. Finally the staff member in question admits to her mistake, originally trying to suggest the link she sent out was the one we have generated. Difficult to justify, when we use Zoom for our webinars and not Google Meets. She had picked up the link in her calendar whilst trying to save the link in her calendar. A trap for young players.

With the blackout last night the caravan batteries are low and the Cruiser auxiliary is failing to charge. I set out the solar panel beside the Cruiser and connect it to the auxiliary. That should see it charge back up with the sunshine. The power being back on in the park will fix the van batteries. Being in such a small site with lots of trees around, there will need to be lots of movement of the solar panel to keep the “juice” feeding into the Cruiser.

What it does mean is that the drinks in the fridge in the Cruiser are not cold.

Robyn has a hair appointment at 1.15 pm so we have until then to get things charged up.

Silver Leader has found an alternative for lunch. The local golf club is having a Mexican truck, pedalling it wares. The Club is set atop one of the few hills here in Broome and offers panoramic views of the water on both sides of the peninsula. I text the Missing Link and suggest there are many moorings we could use should he want to chuck his 6m boat on the back of a semi trailer and truck it here. Given the costs that some of the charters charge here for fishing, it would not take very long to recompense the cost of the transfer.

The Mexican Truck is not offering anything Mexican in its cuisine today. Simple beef or chicken burgers and fish and chips are the only menu selections. Given the location, the repast doesn’t really matter, having said that the avocado sauce spread on my chicken burger certainly has Mexican influence in its taste.

The food comes quick enough so as not to have to scoff it down and still make Robyn’s hair appointment. We leave Silver Leader and Rose and head into town. The sports carnivals we had noticed at the school parks in the days previous are in full swing, regardless of the temperature, which is significant.

In town, it’s easy to find a parking spot not far from the hairdresser. I drop Robyn at her appointment and head on to Tackle World for a few “provisions” after our rock fishing exploits. Before I get to the shop I am stopped by some road works being done to the pathway. Some Council Workers are setting pavers with chemicals. They are jovial and suggest I don’t really want to get any of the stuff they are using on my feet. I walk around thankful for their suggestion.

Tackle World is full with stock. I wander collecting the things I need. I talk to one of the staff about rock fishing here – he all but laughs at me suggesting the only real way to catch fish here is with a boat. Having said that he goes on to say, there are some soft plastics that are very good on fish like Barramundi and may be of interest to me. I buy a packet for “ron”. I end up spending very little, but any cost is potentially too much as far as Robyn is concerned.

The other thing I notice is that all the places that appear to be pedestrian crossings all have signs suggesting pedestrians have to give way to traffic, in very clear words. Obviously, no one in Broome can read as it seems everyone simply walks across stopping traffic at these places AND get quite indignant if you are to brake heavily to avoid them.

Again – everyone being full of their own importance.

Tonight we are going to their outside cinema. Jungle Cruise is showing with Dwayne Johnson. It’s a fun movie. On sitting down we are talking to the patrons in front of us and build up quite a rapport, then all of a sudden a jet screams over the top of us on final into the airport.’

All through the night planes and jets pass over. One tries to capture them on camera, but their interruption is fleeting.

At the time we entered the cinema the outside town was bustling with people. On our return to the street, the town is all but deserted. Strange for a Friday night. Perhaps the hotels are full but the town centre is like a ghost town.
